More About Standboy

Standboy

Standboy is a VS Code extension that transforms idle AI coding time into nostalgic gaming moments. It auto-expands a Game Boy emulator in your sidebar whenever your AI agent starts working, then pauses and tucks away when the agent finishes—keeping you in your IDE instead of drifting to distracting websites.

Product Highlights

  • Auto-show on agent activity: Hooks into Cursor and Claude Code via official lifecycle APIs, with fallback heuristics for other agents. The panel appears only after 5 seconds of real work, never strobing on quick checks.
  • Resumes mid-frame: The webview is retained when hidden—your game pauses exactly where you left off, frame-perfect.
  • Persistent library and saves: ROMs, in-game saves, and cover art survive VS Code restarts. Saves mirror to disk automatically; live state lives in IndexedDB between writes.
  • Auto-identified metadata: SHA-1 matching against a bundled No-Intro database displays real box art and canonical titles regardless of filename.
  • Multi-platform support: Plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance ROMs (.gb, .gbc, .gba) with native fidelity rendering.
  • Zero telemetry: Fully offline operation except for one-shot cover art fetches. No tracking, no analytics.

Use Cases

  • AI-assisted coding sessions: Stay focused during long agent generations without tab-switching to social media—your micro-distraction stays bounded inside VS Code.
  • Retro gaming breaks: Build a personal library of legally-owned classics for quick, interruptible play sessions between coding tasks.
  • Nostalgia preservation: Experience authentic Game Boy gameplay with accurate emulation, original palettes, and faithful save behavior.

Target Audience

Standboy is built for developers using VS Code, Cursor, or Claude Code who want to reclaim wasted wait time during AI agent operations. Ideal for retro gaming enthusiasts, productivity-focused coders, and anyone tired of losing 10 minutes to Reddit after checking if their agent finished.
